On March 30th 2024, 13 years after it’s original request, Romania, officially joined the SCHENGEN zone, removing the need for border checks. This deal only includes the country’s accession to the SCHENGEN air and sea travel, meaning that all land borders are still subject to checks. Lifting air and sea borders is less controversial from refugee control perspective, because operators can be demanded to check identity documents before boarding. I was there that night, flying from Austria to Romania, on the last flight in before the changes took place.
